Week 15
Blog Post #13: Post Mortem

It has finally come to an end! What an intense process... I genuinely can't believe I managed to make a game in just one semester with no prior experience in 3D art, programming, or Unreal Engine as a whole. I'm not sure if I can say I'm really proud of what I've made because I don't think I can call it a real game...at least to me, it's missing out on so much story and areas that I really dreamed for the game, though now I realize it was a bit unrealistic to have such huge goals in such a short time frame for one semester, especially on top of all my other classes to juggle. I would love to keep working on this. I have a huge passion for my original characters and want to be able to finish their love story and share it with the rest of the world, even if it doesn't get that big. I don't know if I've mentioned it earlier, but Yverne, my player character, and Eveline, the adventurer, are fully just variations of my first long-term D&D character and her backstory girlfriend! Part of my drive for this game was really just my passion and love for my characters. I wanted to build a world and story around them just for them and throw in a few of my favorite fantasy elements with some magic and royalty.

I think I learned a lot from all this. I can safely say I finally understand variables and branches, and there are some things I look and and can immediately know what to do. Making widgets appear on the screen as notes or dialogue boxes are like second nature to me! I think I spent a lot of timing learning how visibility and widgets worked and it was very crucial for my game mechanics.

I think one thing is while I did a lot for my UI, content wise, I wish I had more time to build and work on my assets to make things look nicer. I'm glad I was able to finish drawing my icons to add for the inventory! They turned out super cute! But I didn't get to actually do the assets for the dialogue boxes or perfect my artwork for the character display. I realize so much work goes into making a game, and as an individual, it really is hard to get all these things done on my own in a short period of time while balancing other work. That's why, this summer I just want to focus on this for a period of time!
